Candidacy to Unesco World Heritage
-
In 1993, the Royal Commission for Monuments and Sites of the Southern Region of Belgium (Wallonia)
proposed four candidates to the World Heritage:
- the neolithic flint at Spiennes
- the lifts on the canal du Centre
- the cathedral of Tournai
- the environment, castle and gardens at Freÿr
- Later, these candidates with those chosen at Brussels and in Flanders were submitted by Belgium to Unesco. But Wallonia, realizing that the Flanders belforts were presented, decided to present its own belforts instead of Freÿr
- Freÿr remained up to 2008 on the tentative list of Unesco World Heritage.
- Then Wallonia decided to drop Freÿr from the list without any explanation, and instead added 9 new candidates, while Flanders came up with 5 new ones and Brussels with 4.
